When Darryl became a volunteer firefighter almost five years ago for the West Nipissing Fire Services, he did so with more than 30 years of experience standing behind him - his volunteer firefighter father.
The spark that made Darryl want to follow his father's footsteps was his desire to play a role in his community in a way that was challenging and exciting and would be a service that would improve the life of his neighbours.
Darryl acknowledges that there are many challenges in the volunteer fire service, including responsibility and training, but the camaraderie helps in the tough times and always, in Darryl's opinion, brings out the best in of an individual.

Northfield District Fire Department - Nova Scotia By: John, Volunteer Fire Chief
As Chief of Northfield District Fire Department in Nova Scotia, John knows training is key to the safety of his 36 volunteer firefighters and the community they serve. With 32 years experience, he runs training exercises to prepare his volunteers for any emergency response they might encounter. In exchange, firefighters show their appreciation by showing up in high numbers and participating enthusiastically. John also ensures each member knows he or she is integral to the department‘s success. This sentiment helps combat issues of recruitment and retention, constant challenges in a rural community like Northfield. This combination of commitment and solid training has allowed Northfield District to better serve the community by adding Medical First Responder (MFR) calls in addition to the normal emergency calls and ice and water rescues they attend.

Huntsville Fire Department – Ontario By: Paul, Acting Captain
It’s never too late to make a difference. That’s the lesson Paul Calleja, Acting Captain of the Huntsville Fire Department has to share. Paul thought about becoming a volunteer firefighter for a long time, but a married man with five daughters and a job that put him on the road 65 nights a year, he didn’t think it was a possibility. After listening to the stories of two friends, Paul decided to listen to the voice in his head and soon found himself as a new recruit. Any worries about his decision were quickly put to rest after he realized that when his pager goes off it means that someone is having a really bad day and that he and his crew can do something to hopefully make it a bit better. It is this sentiment, rushing to help someone in crisis and expecting nothing in return, that reinforces to Paul that he made the right decision and his only regret is not volunteering sooner.

Springfield Fire and Rescue Service - Manitoba By: Mitch, Volunteer Firefighter
When Mitch started his career as a rural volunteer firefighter in 2004, he might not have known that the Springfield Fire and Rescue Service, where he serves, is the busiest rural fire service in the Province of Manitoba. On nearly a daily basis, Mitch and his crews respond to an assortment of fire, motor vehicle collisions and emergency medical response calls totalling nearly 700 incidents a year.
This busy service area might have been what gave Mitch the drive to enhance his fire training by pursing different accreditations including becoming a Fire Inspector, Instructor and Fire Investigator.
Committed to sharing his ideals of excellence in the fire service, Mitch and his brother Mike, also a member of the Springfield Fire and Rescue Service, both serve and protect the people of Springfield.

South West Oxford Fire and Emergency Services - Ontario By: Tim, Volunteer Firefighter
When Tim Smith started talking to volunteer firefighters with the South West Oxford Fire and Emergency Service about what they do, he didn’t know that he would find not only his purpose but also a brotherhood. In the ten years since that conversation, Tim and his team of volunteer firefighters from Station #3 have helped out countless people in their community in times of emergency. To make a further impact in helping those in need, Tim has become very active within the community by overseeing and arranging the department’s fire safety education program in the local public school.
Tim acknowledges that he couldn’t help his community and his brother firefighters without the support and understanding of his wife and three sons, “They understand that when my pager goes off, I have to leave no matter what family activity we are doing.”
